As the second largest monolith in the world, Stone Mountain is more than five miles in circumference at its base. The mountaintop is a surreal landscape of bare rock and freshwater rock pools formed by rainwater gathering in eroded depressions. During the rainy season, the pools are home to unusual clam shrimp and fairy shrimp. Hiking enthusiasts can access the summit on a steep walkup trail, and will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding area, the Atlanta skyline, Kennesaw Mountain and even the Appalachians.

Stone Mountain Park Carving. Conceived in 1909 by Helen Plane, Atlanta’s chapter president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Stone Mountain Park carving is a bas-relief depicting Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis on horseback riding in a group across the mountain. In a fabulous use of the natural shape of the mountain, the horses’ bodies merge into the mountainside at the foot of the carving, giving the appearance that they are emerging from the stone itself. The carving is three acres wide and recedes 42 feet into the mountain. From the initial concept of the carving, design ideas varied, funding was an issue and work was slowed by a procession of stone carvers. After 63 years and four different stone carvers, the project was finally considered finished in 1972. The Stone Mountain carving is open to the public every day of the year. A laser light show is projected on the carving nightly in the summer and offers a unique way to view it, with fireworks at the end of the show.Visit Stone Mountain Park. Stone Mountain Park is open every day of the year, although hours do vary by date and season. Entrance into Stone Mountain Park requires a one-day parking pass or an annual parking pass. The vehicle fee must be paid in cash at the entrance gates to the park; bicycles and pedestrians can enter at no charge. The parking pass gives you access to the park's numerous outdoor attractions including public picnic areas, hiking trails, the children's playground, walk-up trail and the spectacular laser light show. Stone Mountain Park also offers several other fun attractions. Many of these attractions operate on a seasonal schedule, and ticket pricing varies based upon which attractions are open.
