Georgia Tech University. The Georgia Institute of Technology, known as Georgia Tech, is a public university ranked among the top ten in the United States. Established in 1885 with the construction of Tech Tower and a shop building, Georgia Tech's campus occupies a large section of midtown Atlanta. Georgia Tech is well known for its engineering, computing and science programs, but the university also offers degrees in architecture, liberal arts and management. Georgia State University. Georgia State University was founded in 1913 and has a mission statement of excellence in teaching, research and service. The University is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Shorter College. Shorter College in Rome, Georgia is a private, liberal arts undergraduate and graduate school. The school was founded in 1873 as a Cherokee Baptist Female College, and in the 1950’s Shorter College began admitting men. Morris Brown College. Morris Brown College is a private, four–year liberal arts college affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Founded in 1881 by former slaves, it is a historically black college located in Atlanta’s west end community and was one of six institutions that comprise a group of colleges known as the Atlanta University Center. For more than a century, the college accepted many students from poor backgrounds, and many returned to their hometowns to work as teachers. Clayton State University. Clayton State University is a public university located on 163 wooded acres in Morrow, Georgia just minutes from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Founded in 1969, Clayton State was originally known as Clayton Junior College, but became a four–year institution in 1986.
